I wrote a song once (and only once) to mark the passing of a friend who dropped dead at the age of 43 on his way home from playing a gig in a local hotel. The chorus of my song goes:
We should live a little harder
Love a little more
Fear a little less
To step out the front door.
I see that as a recipe for breaking the pattern, but I keep not doing it. Crazy, innit?

Hey Rob! I really liked your story but I was curious about something I would really like your opinion on. I read everywhere on Substack that Twitter is the best place to get new subscribers, but everywhere else on the net says Twitter is dying and to rely on the old school methods of networking and getting friends and family to share your blog with their friends. What are your thoughts on this and what would you recommend to newcomers here just starting out?
hard to say! my general approach has always been to make NEW friends in the corners of the internet that make me feel alive and connected. so like, instead of relying on family and old college roommates or whatever, it's about finding the corners of the internet where you belong, and starting to make friends there. whether that happens on twitter or facebook or forums or reddit or email or wherever else, those connections are what enable you to publish work and have it spread organically. pretty much any success i'm have now is mostly a result of me just making a TON of friends the last few years, many of whom are interested in the stuff i write.
I'll add to what Rob just said. What is the most comfortable way you like to share yourself with the world? Text? Audio? Video? Photos? Etc.
My work is very visual, so twitter sucks, and instagram and facebook are the best place. Also which platforms do the people who love your work hang out? Mine are not on twitter, so I don't play over there.
Hi Robin! I don't know really. I just started writing a little over a year ago and I'm still to shy to do visual or audio work like a YouTube channel or a podcast but I'm working on stepping outside my boundaries. I do like Instagram but I don't know how to post on there without coming across as a robotic salesperson trying to get people interested in my blog. I do love the visuals on there though. I did reluctantly sign back up for Twitter, but I got to say I was pleasantly surprised. Rob was totally right. I started making some new friends on there and am starting to get some new followers. Hopefully that will transfer over to Substack one day but so far Im just enjoying meeting new people.😊 What kind of work do you do if you don't mind me asking?
